What is epigenetics?

Your genes play an important role in your health, but so do your behaviors  and environment, such as what you eat and how physically active you are.

Epigenetics is the study of how your behaviors and environment can cause  changes that affect the way your genes work.

Unlike genetic changes, epigenetic changes are reversible and do not  change your DNA sequence, but they can change how your body reads a DNA sequence and how it ages.

DNA methylation and epigenetics of aging

Recent research suggests that epigenetics, especially DNA methylation, plays a mechanistic role in aging.
Epigenetic clocks, which measure changes in specific DNA methylation sites,
can accurately predict chronological age in a variety of species, including humans.
These clocks are currently the best biomarkers for predicting mortality in humans.

Targeting DNA methylation to reverse aging

We expect the research at the interface of epigenetics and aging will continue to increase in the next few years.
